Need allies? Come row downstream! Discover unique strategies and make the Woodland wilder by adding hirelings. Best with fewer players, great with more!

Hirelings can be added to games at any player count. With fewer players, the hirelings add new pieces to the map, ramping up the tension and giving you more tactical options. With more players, some hireling cards will flip over to reveal new special abilities to gain, letting you explore unique and powerful strategies.

This is an expansion. A copy of Root the board game is required to play.

The hirelings really shine at two or three players—they fill the board with just enough chaos without slowing things down. I love that they slot into any player count, so my group can toss them in whether we're four or just two.

Took these out for a solo game and the hirelings made the river feel alive, adding just the right amount of chaos without overcomplicating a two-player match. The best-with-fewer-players note held up perfectly.

The hirelings really shine at lower player counts, we’ve used them in three-player games and each one adds a fresh twist to the faction balance. Setup is simple, they just slot in alongside the Riverfolk tiles without interrupting the flow.
